is there a finite number of unique songs able to be created in each genre?

And if so, how close are we to reaching the limit?

Not close to the limit. Something other analyses have left out is lyrics, which technically all “songs” generally have.

“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, “Baa Baa Black Sheep” and the ABC song are three different songs with an identical melody. So multiply all the possible melodies by the variety in human language and we ain’t never gonna run out. 🙂
