metabolism speed

So I understand metabolism at a five year old level, and that things like intake, exercise, sleep and medication can all affect it.

My question is: is it more affected by the volume or by the calories? If I eat massive servings of celery (not likely) will my body still think I’m starving? What about slowly digesting foods? I’ve been known to have a chia smoothie for breakfast and have no appetite for the rest of the day, but probably only have 500 calories in the drink

Metabolism is the amount of energy required for cellular functions, you’re correct in saying that it can be affected by various factors, but generally it is a value that remains constant for most of your life and is not directly related to satiety.

Satiety is largely related to the components in food ( carbs, fats, proteins), so in your example, the chia smoothie is full of complex carbohydrates ( fibre ) that thickens up in your stomach, great for satiety and digestion, you feel fuller for longer but it’s only 500 cals, you’ll probably feel the same if you eat another high fibre food like oats.
Something like cake on the other hand, high in calories, but full of simple carbs that are broken down immediately, you’ll be hungry a lot sooner compared to the chia smoothie.
You asked a quite complex question, hopefully this answer helps somewhat.
