My phone screen broke and slowly tinted blue, then purple, and finally pitch black. Why?

Each pixel is made by one of three lights: red/blue/green. All on is white, all off is black (simplification of technical stuff happening). Sounds like your red and green back lights failed first, then your blue one slowly failed, going through darker hues of blue until it completely failed to black (all backlights off).
