One eye seeing things brighter than the other

I read that when one pupil dilates/constricts, so will the other. However, when I cover my one eye for a while and suddenly uncover it, everything seems very bright when viewed through that one eye (such was the apparent use of eye patches by pirates). What causes this one eye to see things brighter if the pupil isn’t dilated?

[this ](https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/j4bg9/can_pupils_dilate_independently/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) has an explanation why. Basically pupil size isn’t the only thing involved with seeing in the dark. A bunch of other things are involved too. Pupils are a big part of it but not the only one, other elements contribute to seeing in the dark
