How is it that it’s possible to shoot someone in the chest so that they’re dead before they hit the ground? Surely a person could survive for more than a few seconds anything other than a headshot. Does being shot in the heart area really kill a person instantly?

Some scientists theorize that a high speed bullet hitting the chest in the right way can send a [shockwave](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrostatic_shock) through the body, which could cause blood vessels to rupture in the brain. This could possibly cause a person to die before they hit the ground, but the science isn’t fully settled in this area yet.
It’s a trope, they wouldn’t die instantly. Even if the heart was ruptured it would be a bit before they’re deceased. A rapid loss of blood flow would likely make them unconscious very, very quickly
