(regarding prop aviation) Why do we turn on carb heat before landing?

50 viewsEngineeringOther

I can’t remember well, but I’m quite sure my CFI told me to make sure carb heating is off during descent since in the case we need to go around we would have the max amount of power available. Also as long as you’re not descending more than a couple hundred feet carb heat isn’t that necessary since, even with low(ish) power settings for that short amount of time no ice would form…

(sorry for posting this on maybe not the best option, but i couldn’t find any other channel to put this on)

Does he lean the mixture for optimal power too?

I’ve picked up carb ice with carb heat on at landing doing touch and goes, all depends on the temp and humidity. This is going back 30 years but I think you put mixture rich (which should be for landing) , max power , and then carb. So that any possible ice that’s accumulated is melted away.

You’re not trying to make 2nd segment climb or avoid obstacles in solid IMC. But if you were I’d want to be sure my only engine would be working.
