Repetition compulsion of trauma in psychology.

Why do people recreate their trauma? Specifically childhood trauma that someone may not be consciously aware of.

I have read that sometimes people consciously recreate trauma as a way to “take back power” by reframing the situation they were traumatized by.

But I am curious specifically as to the psychological mechanisms behind why someone may repeat something like sexual abuse especially if they were abused in their youth and may not even be able to consciously remember it.

If they cannot remember it it could be a weird way for their brain to try and make sense of it. Like practicing anything really… a subject in school, certain parts of one’s work or hobbies… if they cannot remember it I would think it’s just sometimes a natural way to process trauma, hopefully arriving at the point where it makes sense, there is a sense of closure, and then they can heal from it. There are traumas that people remember and they keep recreating it without even knowing it. Like being abused and becoming abusive- this is the main way I see this play out.
