Sometimes we are told to brace for impact, like in the event of a aeroplane crash, but I’ve also heard that drunk people have fewer injuries if they for example fall down stairs, because they had no tension in their bodies. Which is better to avoid injuries if you had to make a split second decision to, for example, jump out of a burning building, or if you anticipate a crash a second before it happens?

Depends on the impact. In a crashing plane you brace to avoid being ragdolled and caving your skull in as you smash against seats and whoever is sitting next to you.
Falling out of a building you’re probably better off relaxing.
Essentially the difference is are you going to impact something once (relax) or likely to have multiple impacts such as crashing inside something you’d rattle around in (brace to prevent additional impacts). .
