should you brace for impact or go soft?

Sometimes we are told to brace for impact, like in the event of a aeroplane crash, but I’ve also heard that drunk people have fewer injuries if they for example fall down stairs, because they had no tension in their bodies. Which is better to avoid injuries if you had to make a split second decision to, for example, jump out of a burning building, or if you anticipate a crash a second before it happens?

If you can ready springy body parts like bent knees to be able to take the force, you should. Panic bracing in an accident often causes you to fully lock the joints, which causes damage on impact.
