I’ve heard if your spouse made more, that when it is time to apply, the lower earner can actually qualify for the higher earners benefit payout?

Yes.

The idea is that if you have a married couple, they are now a combined unit, not two individuals. The one making less is relying on the one making more to live and pay their bills.

So even if the one making more dies, that single “unit” still collects survivorship payments from the spouse that made more.

The idea is that say you have a stay at home mom who has no work history at all because her husband provided for the family. She should not get screwed over if her husband dies before her.
