What exactly causes gallstones and why is removing the gallbladder the ‘cure’ (unlike kidney stones)?

Gallstones can be formed from some of the components of bile (cholesterol, salt, or bilirubin). The gallbladder needs to be removed because if the stones are bad enough to cause symptoms it’s very likely that it will be a recurring problem and removal of the gallbladder is the only way to completely stop the formation of stones.
