if your resting heart rate is above 90 and up to 120, how bad is it on long term?

Not true. If it goes to zero you are dead.

But assuming it is still beating, it has to pump fast enough to move blood round your body. It has to pump a certain volume to that enough oxygen can get everywhere. Each beat is a pump that moves some blood with oxygen in it round your body. If it is too slow then the oxygen won’t get everywhere and that is bad for the places it won’t get to. So there is a certain minimum resting heart rate you don’t want to go below. But beyond that yes you want the rate to be as close to this minimum as possible while at rest.
