The word inversely

I don’t really understand it or how to use it in terms of using it to describe a relationship between two things

Usually, inversely is used to contrast against directly. As an example, the weight of a bottle of water is directly proportional to the volume of water in the bottle; in other words, the more volume of water, the greater the weight of the bottle.

Inversely means that the two values are going in different directions. Using the water bottle as an example again, the weight of the water bottle is *inversely* proportional to the *volume of air* in the bottle. This is true, since the more water you have, the less air you have. So as the air volume goes down (filled by water), the weight goes up. One value decreases, the other increases.

If x influences a then there is some relation in the lines of x*n=a, i.e. the bigger x gets, the bigger a becomes.

If x influences a inversely then there is some relation in the lines of n/x=a, i.e. the bigger x gets, the smaller a becomes.

The inverse is the mathematical opposite. The inverse of x is 1/x. So something times its inverse is 1.

In conversation, I could say people who like Chinese food have good taste. The inverse is also true: people who don’t like Chinese food don’t have good taste.
