Because it’s waaayyyy too concentrated.

Diluted the flavors just get those nice, soft, aromatic flavors.

But when you get it directly, it’s super concentrated and sets off your taste buds and nerves like a blaze.

Think of it like salt. A little bit of salt sprinkled on your food is nice, pour a table spoon of salt in your mouth and you will hate it

Vanilla tastes really good right? Chocolate too?

Please try a teaspoon of cocoa powder followed by a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

The stuff in vape juice is primarily propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine and flavorings.
Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are mostly tasteless compared to the next two ingredients.
Nicotine is VERY bitter and flavor extracts when concentrated can be seen as overwhelming and thus bad to our palettes.
Think of it like a little bit of chili powder in a dish gives it a nice flavor and subtle heat but a spoonful of it will burn.

Same reason a cup of coffee is nice but eating a fist full of coffee grounds would be vile.
