Water bottle mold and water

Why does a camelbak water thing I have get smelly when only a little bit of water is in it for a few days, but if say a cup or two is in, it doesn’t get nasty?

but wouldnt more water give more of a base to grow in?

It’s simply the time it takes for bacteria to multiply in that amount of water, which is gonna be longer the more water you have in it. Btw this isn’t mold. Mold is a spore, bacteria are… bacteria. It’s little cells eating the stuff in the water
