If you have deposits of lint in your belly button I’m going to have to guess that you’ve got body hair and wear cotton shirts. My theory has been that as you move around, the hair on your belly pulls on the fibers of your shirt. Belly hair generally grows toward the belly button so that’s where the fibers end up.

Belly button fluff or lint is material from your clothes rubbed off by movement and friction from skin/hair. The hairier you are the more lint you have in there.

It is lint from your shirt. It runs off due to friction when you walk and some of it ends up there. There is no real purpose… Unless you wanted to gather enough to remake a shirt.
