Brain waves are rhythmic electrical impulses generated by the brain’s neurons when they communicate with each other. These electrical signals can be detected and measured using a technique called electroencephalography (EEG). EEG involves placing electrodes on the scalp to detect and record the electrical activity produced by the brain.

There are several types of brain waves, classified based on their frequency (Hz), that can be measured by EEG. **Delta waves** are the slowest brain waves and are usually observed during deep sleep.
**Theta waves** are present during light sleep, meditation, and states of relaxation. **Alpha waves** occur when you are awake but relaxed, such as during meditation or daydreaming. **Beta waves** are associated with active, alert, and focused mental activity.
**Gamma waves** are the fastest brain waves and are associated with higher cognitive functions such as memory, learning, and perception.
