A fuel injector is the piece of hardware that is used to spray fuel into the combustion chambers of your engine. The fuel pump takes fuel from your gas tank, and pushes it up the fuel line, into the fuel injector, which sprays the gasoline in a VERY FINE (atomized) mist into the combustion chamber where the spark plug will ignite the mist, causing the explosion that causes the piston in the chamber to push down, turning the crank, and driving the vehicle.

Gasoline in liquid form doesn’t explode, and is even pretty difficult to burn. When gasoline becomes a gas (gas like air, not gas-short for gasoline) it is able to ignite and explode. So it’s the fuel injector’s job to get the gasoline into the combustion chamber in a gaseous form that can explode in a uniform and efficient way.
