I remember hearing about it and I’m wondering how they work and what makes the brain think the amputated limb hurts

Simply put, the nerves that were connected to the limbs are still there, so the nerves which were connected to the limb can still be stimulated. The brain still processes it as though it is coming from the limb.

When you lose a body part (like a leg) but you still sometimes feel “pain” in that part even though it doesn’t exist anymore.
