Semantics deals with expressing the utmost correct application and definition of words. Essentially when someone says “that’s just semantics” they are saying that while you both have a understanding of what you are talking about, the use of a given/suggested word isn’t as accurate as it could be, and that technically portions of the defined meaning of the word isn’t perfectly applicable despite it possibly being loosely used (and often commonly confused).

The purpose of semantics is to propose exact meanings of words and phrases, and remove confusion, which might lead the readers to believe a word has many possible meanings. It makes a relationship between a word and the sentence through their meanings. (for example, a child. it could be a boy or a girl, an older child or a young child).
