What are the anatomical/physiological differences between vocal ranges (i.e. soprano vs bass)?

The vocal cords in your body are basically strings. Imagine stings on a guitar for example. The longer or thicker the string, the lower the pitch you get when you pull it. The shorter or thinner the string, the higher the pitch. The same applies to vocal chords.
