Peristalsis: the involuntary constriction and relaxation of the muscles of the intestine or another canal, creating wave-like movements that push the contents of the canal forward.

You’re just hearing gasous pressure gradients shift through your body. And poop as it’s moving. And chyme. And other various secretions or digesting foods.

In the absence of food, every 90 or so minutes (an ultradian rhythm) there are waves of contractions that start at our stomach and work their way down our small intestine called the migrating motor complex.

Think of it like trying the get the last bits of a freeze pop or toothpaste from the tube. The role is not entirely known but said the help lower the ph of your small intestine and help migrate microbiota, gas and the last bits of food from your last meal. I believe the audible gurgling comes from the movement of gases.

It’s said to be one of the benefits of fasting, so when you hear the gurgling don’t associate it with hunger, associate it with health and your body doing it’s job. Note: There is peristalsis but that is more involved with the movement of food after a meal not bedtime gurgles.

Borborygymi! My grandmother trained me on this one. So your stomach has all sorts of gunk in it, not to mention it’s one long meat tube right? So how does stuff get through it? Icky, sticky squeezing and mushing around.
