There are little hairs in your ear called cilia. These cilia transfer changes in pressure into electrochemical signals that are sent to your brain and are then perceived as sound. Loud noises, such as music concerts or lawnmowers, can cause damage to these hairs and cause that distinctive ringing sound that’s associated with tinnitus. When certain sensory cells are damaged in the ear, they can release a chemical that activates pain fibers.
