What causes the convergence/knot like appearance of a liquid being poured?

So I was pouring some warm water from a container into some bottles and observed how water converges at a point which pretty much makes me think of a knot. What exactly causes this?

This is due to the liquid conforming itself to the shape of its container. Most cups have a circular lid to pour out of so it converges to one spot because circles have no edges.
