Basically, most unexpected foreign objects in the respiratory tract are not good for us. They’re designed for air and air alone. So inhaling something that isn’t air will cause the body to reject that substance in the form of coughing. The nose may also get runny because your body produces more mucous to trap any additional floating substances in the nose before it enters further into the body.
This is your body’s natural defense mechanism – if it works, you have nothing to worry about. The concern comes from when it fails to work and you have that foreign substance in your lungs doing damage.
