As far as I can tell, it makes some sounds louder and others quieter. Can someone explain with a metaphor or visual what it’s doing?

It’s a more sophisticated version of the bass and treble knobs on radios. Instead of just controlling how much bass vs treble you get, you can adjust multiple frequency ranges.
