I recently moved and noticed that there’s a lot more dust buildup in this house than my previous one. What exactly makes up dust? Where does it come from? Why are some places more dusty than others?

Dust is a lot of things. It could be part soil, part volcanic ash, part pollution, part dead skin, part plant pollen, part hair, part fibers of clothes, part meteorite, part lots of other things.
Your current house is probably dustier than your old house due to poorer airflow.
