What exactly is seratonin and why do people say that some may have more of it and some less.

Hello everyone. Thank you for reading my guestion. I do know that Seratonin should be some sort of chemical reaction in brain but that’s about it. I know alot of songs mentioning seratonin and I did read Wikipedia article about it but it is still pretty unclear what exactly it is. Thank you for every response.

serotonin or 5HT is the chemical that more or less mediates our feeling of happiness, social well being, and several other senses of “good feeling”.

I have a hard time explaining it, but let’s say that it is what makes us feel good both when we are in a good social setting, and when we have food satiation. fucking with it can also effect our sense of pattern recognition. kinda let your brain explode about why social situation security, pattern recognition and food plenitude would be connected in the brain and you can kinda “get” what serotonin does.

>I know alot of songs mentioning seratonin

I would guess songs mention it because tryptamine psychedelics are 5HT agonists (they imitate it’s shape and do a somewhat-ok job of imitating what it does in the brain). much music is related to drug culture, so I’d say popular artists could be talking about tryptamines.

>why do people say that some may have more of it and some less.

well, clinical depression is more or less the pathology of either having too little endogenous serotonin or too few receptor sites for the brain to “take in” the serotonin it has.

of course, a person who is malnourished or finds themselves in a socially horrible situation will have low serotonin too.

It regulates mood, appetite, and sleep. A lot of people boil that down to: low seratonin = depression and high seratonin = happy. In reality it is a very complicated neurotransmitter that seems to have a role in lots of different systems.

I’d say most pop culture references are really depression references.

Serotonin is one of the chemicals that contributes to happiness and excitement, but also anxiety and panic. Everyone’s serotonin levels are different.

In case you’re ever going to experiment with MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methamphetamine) which is commonly known as “Ecstasy,” you might feel an off day after taking the (party) drug. This is because all the seratonin is being squeezed out “all” at once. This provides an extremely happy high. The days after most people feel a bit down, the drug has disturbed their serotonin balance and the body needs to fill the seratonin levels in order to feel normal again. Taking 5-HTP pills slightly support the recovery together with bananas, chocolate, chickpeas and other edibles providing tryptophan. MDMA, isn’t as harmful as many people think, although doing it too often may cause serotonin syndrome.
