What exactly is the sound barrier?

Sound travels at a certain speed, depending on the medium. Traveling through our atmosphere (the air at sea level), it’s 1225 km/h. The more dense the material (e.g. it’s much faster in water), the faster it travels. Breaking the sound barrier usually means you’re moving faster than the speed of sound through air.

It is the speed of sound in a certain medium, most often air. There was previously concern that a physical object could not go faster than the speed of sound, but this has been proven false.
