I have a baby right now, and if her responses are anything to go by, “general bafflement”, but then she pulls the same face when looking at cupboards so who knows. Certainly she has no concept that what she’s seeing is a reflection, and thus has no no idea that the baby staring back at her is her. The fact her daddy is holding this other, mystery baby doesn’t seem to bother her, and why would it? Maybe there are two of me. Maybe there are many more of me. She has no concept at all. I don’t think it ever “clicks” and she suddenly realises what she’s seeing, it’s just a gradual learning about how the physical world exists. She’s only just realised her hands are on the arms, after all, rather than being little balls of flesh that float in front of her. I think we take for granted, as adults, all the things we just know.
