What happens in the body when a food craving hits and how does the body know to send a message to the brain about it?

Basically what the title says. My wife mentioned the other night she had a craving for red meat and orange juice. I understand this is common when the body is anemic, but what is going on biologically? I don’t think l’ve ever craved anything at all so I have nothing to go on.

Your gut and stomach actually have a major nerve connecting them, which sends signals in both directions. The cells in your gut (and elsewhere in your body) can actually detect levels of various nutrients in your body and send “craving” signals to the brain to make it seek out foods that are high in the craved nutrient.

What’s recently been discovered is that your cells aren’t the only ones sending these signals. Bacteria living in your gut can also send signals that can trigger cravings in your brain.

Humans are an ecosystem for bacteria, when bacteria want something they tell your brain YOU need it.
