What happens to a woman’s egg when she’s on the pill?

So I know how a normal menstrual cycle works. The egg matures, hormones work their magic, the egg gets released fallopian tube where it can get inseminated. If that doesn’t happen the bleeding starts.

I know there are different ways different contraceptive pills work. But most of them will prevent the release of the egg. I did google but I came across a few contradicting answers. The one set of answers was: nothing happens to the eggs, you basically save them. A lot of others sources claimed that you don’t save any eggs, the eggs will mature non the less, they just don’t get released.

So firstly, what actually happens?
Secondly, if the eggs don’t get released, what happens to them instead?

Multiple eggs start developing each cycle. Usually only one becomes fully mature and is released. The others die and are absorbed. If none are released all are absorbed.

The egg does not mature. The pill tricks your body into thinking it’s already pregnant, so there’s no need to waste the energy on preparing a new egg for fertilization.
