Most of it gets stopped by our nose hairs. General dust and particulate will be caught in the nose hairs and removed during normal exhaling, or will be caught in mucus and removed that way. Breathing in too much dust, to where it overwhelms or gets past the nose hairs, will make you sneeze or cough to remove it.
