How do they know to stop trying to fertilise the egg?

The egg only allows one sperm to enter. The rest die and are eventually flushed out of the body. If, for some reason, something goes wrong and an extra sperm manages to sneak in, the fertilized egg will likely not survive and be flushed out as well.

They don’t know and they don’t stop. Instead they keep trying until they die of exhaustion or the environment around them. Ultimately all the dead cells will be cleaned up by the immune system and swept out of the body in normal discharge of waste.
