There are a number of such chemicals but the most notable is probably cortisol.

Stress is a natural response, it is designed to be something that prepares you to solve problems. Say you are a human in the wild and about to be attacked by a lion, the stress hormone’s job is to prepare your body to take action, it increases blood sugar, boosts your energy, gets your heart to start pumping more, your brain goes into overdrive, everything needed to boost your body into peak performance to deal with a problem.

The problem is that for wild humans, stress was typically a short term reaction. Humans didn’t think about their career 20 years down the line, their focus was on “what am I going to eat today”, day after day. They find what they are going to eat, they find a safe place, they have no stress, tomorrow’s problems are not something that can be solved today so no need to stress about them.

With more society and changes to our lifestyle, long term stress has become more prevalent and our bodies are not designed to handle being in a constant state of stress. They are designed to deal with a problem and then de-stress. Which leads to all sorts of complications.
