It happens once in a blue moon… Sorry.
A blue moon is an additional full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year: either the third of four full moons in a season, or a second full moon in a month of the common calendar.
It has nothing to do with the color.
To answer your ‘how often’ question literally 1.16699016e-8hz is the frequency of a blue moon. Or once every thousand days.
I sourced my info from two google searches.
There are two definitions. The “real” definition is when there are four full moons in a single season (spring, summer, etc.). The more common definition, though, is when there are two full moons in the same calendar month, as there are this month (Oct 1 and Oct 31). It happens every couple of years.
The moon does not actually turn blue.
