When you look at an ekg the qt interval is the measure of time of your heart beat. When it gets prolonged you’re prone abnormal heart Rhythms that can be dangerous.

It is the time between the start of a single contraction of the (lower two chambers) heart and when it is ready to beat again.

If it is prolonged it can prevent the heart beating fast enough to provide sufficient oxygen, and can also result in an “R on T” event, which has the potential to cause a dysrhythmia (can result in a cardiac arrest).

It is typically caused by electrolyte deficiencies, drug side effects, or genetic predisposition.
