What is a step, 1/2 step 1/4 step 1/6 step etc, in music, relating to rhythm/time signatures?

I’m not talking about music theory relating to notes and keys, but relating to time, like beats and bars.

Note duration is not measured in steps–not ever. Pitch is measured in steps. Duration is measured in a system [succinctly explained here ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Note_value). We usually shorthand these as fractions of a beat (quarter note, sixteenth note etc) but they all have proper names such as breve and quaver. And diddle. Drummers talk a lot about diddles and quadradiddles and so forth. This is one of the reasons no one likes a drummer.
