I could be wrong but here is my understanding.
simple answer is, too much alcohol stops your brain from working,
Complicated answer: when you consume an alcoholic beverage it gets digested and broken down to it’s core components, alcohol being one of them. From there the alcohol flows through the bloodstream and the liver breaks it down. The problem is that alcohol also inhibits brain function (I think the hippocampus, it’s in charge of consciousness). Your liver is only able to break up a certain point of alcohol at one time, so if you drink to much alcohol the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream is too much for your liver to break down quickly enough and there is too much alcohol for your brain to still properly function. Ergo: alcohol poisoning.
Edit: added simple answer.
When you drink so much alcohol that your body can’t process it fast or safe enough to get rid off it. By too much I mean drinking more than six beers in five minutes. You will throw up and probably pass out which is not good for you. You may just sleep it off but chances are you will need to go to a hospital.
I hope that is simple and accurate enough.
