What is anti-theft in cars and how does it work?

There are a couple of methods, but the most common is the “immobilizer” which just denies running the engine if the key inserted is not validated. Besides the actual cut metal shape, modern keys also have short range communication capabilities, like RFID or something similar, and the car can identify the key itself. Sometimes the manual will suggest removing the car key from your keyring in case other keys have something similar and interfere with the operation. Keyless operation (push a button to start the engine) is a similar concept, but wider range since the key itself has a battery in it so it largely just has to be inside the car.

And of course there’s more conventional things like an alarm that sounds if the car door unlocks or the ignition is powered up when the car was locked and cannot be confirmed a proper key unlocked it, etc.
