What is auto-tune and how exactly is used?

Auto tune is an algorithm that analyzes the music to find out what its exact pitch is, rounds this off to the closest tuned note and then changes the pitch of the music to match the tuned note. This means that the output sounds similar to the input but in a clean pitch. So even if an instrument is out of tune you can make it sound like it was in perfect tune. It is mostly used on vocals as it is very hard hard to sing in a perfect pitch.
However it is also possible to change the settings on the auto tune to become too active which will make the output sound more robotic. Especially if the input is very out of tune or changing all the time the auto tune may have a hard time interpreting it correctly with the wrong settings. This robotic sound have become popular to use and can be heard in lots of pop music. This is similar to the vocoder fad that came before producing a similar but yet different robotic vocal.
