Cortisol is a stress hormone. While it does a bunch of stuff in the body, it causes stress and preps your body for action. It drives the “fight or flight” instinct. We often think of stress as stuff like being worried about a test or stuff at work, but originally it was is that a tiger? I need to be ready to fight to the death. While we don’t get to is that a tiger levels of cortisol, low level stressors cause its release as well. That “other stuff” it does is to get the body ready for action. Because of that, it can be pretty hard on the body as we aren’t really meant to handle it in large sustained doses, it can cause negative effects on the body associated with chronic stress.
