What is Cyclic Voltammetery, What Does it Measure, And What is it Used For?

I will be interning in an electrochemistry research group and was told I would be performing this kind of analysis frequently. I understand it has something to do with redox reactions but I am a little confused on the nitty gritty of what this actually measures chemically as well as why it is useful.

You take a few electrodes in a solution and you apply a voltage sweeping across a range while measuring the current. Spikes of current indicate that a chemical reaction is taking place. There is a third electrode that operates as a control but honestly, I didn’t fully understand that part. These things can react differently whether you sweep up or down which is why you do it in a cyclic nature. It’s how you discover new reactions that may be used to synthesize chemicals and measure efficiency.

Forgive me if this has errors as I’m a bit rusty on the subject.
