What is Greek life in colleges?

And why do they have fraternity and sorority names so strange? Example: Alpha kappa what??? Why?

I don’t understand the whole picture of Greek life. What is it? And why does it exist?

Edit: and why do they all move-in to one big house instead of their own dorms like the usual college student?

I think greek life continues to exist because new adults being independent for the first time can find a need to belong to and identify with a group like they had with their family and friend group back home.

The idea of a pre-made close-knit brotherhood or sisterhood is quite appealing, especially if they also have potential connections and networking with alumni to get a future career.

Mix in some secret codes and handshakes to make you feel special and on the “inside” and it is easy to see how it could quickly become part of a college students identity.

And mixers, parties and social events are nice too.
