What is happening to a person when an Opioid-like drug is causing them to nod off? Answer- This is a direct result of the drugs mechanism of action. The drug is a depressant and slows down a person’s breathing. This Lack of sufficient oxygen to the brain causes the sleepy feeling which causes the nod. Regardless of whether the individual is trying to get high or they were severely injured and are receiving too much pain medicine… if enough drug is taken, the effect on the central nervous system will be the same. Drowsiness, respiratory depression, nodding, sleeping, and possibly potential death due to respiratory arrest.
