What is meant by ‘Logos’?

“Logos” is the translation of an Ancient Greek word, Λόγος, that means “word” or “discourse.”

In a conservative, reactionary, religious context it is almost certainly a reference to Jesus Christ, as the first verse of the first chapter of the Gospel of John is, in the original Greek:

Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ **λόγος**, καὶ ὁ **λόγος** ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ **λόγος**.

Or, in English:

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”

In certain [Christian theologies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logos_(Christianity)) Logos is not only considered “the Word”, but, because “the Word was God”, Logos *is* God (and, because of the Trinity, by extension, Jesus Christ).
