most EMG is actually surface EMG. It’s done using sticky electrode pads. The drawback is that you pick up electrical signals from all the muscles in that area. there’s no way to tell which muscle the signal is coming from.

But it’s also possible to do EMG using needles that are inserted into the muscle. this allows doctors to target a specific muscle. this is called needle EMG.
