In general terms, there isn’t much of a difference. An ellipse is a cross-section of a cone, while an oval is a roundish, not-quite circular shape. Any ellipse is an oval, while not every oval is an ellipse.

Oval means egg-shaped and it can be pretty free-formed.
An ellipse is described by a mathmatical formula (like a circle, but with two center points).
An oval can be an ellipse, but not all ovals are ellipses.

Ellipses are symmetrical on both major axis, ovals are egg-shaped (much more obvious in Portuguese where egg=ovo, oval=oval) so symmetrical only across the longer axis.

an oval is symmetrical on it’s long axis, an ellipse is symmetrical on it’s long AND short axes.
