Usually, the line level inputs accept the left and right stereo sound, and hardware called a “crossover ” inside the sub sends just the “low” frequencies to its internal amplifier and speakers, and there is often a knob to adjust at what frequency it stops. If you re adding a sub to simple “stereo” setup that is all it takes. Some systems have a subwoofer output. These are commonly called “2.1 channel” system (left and right channels plus a dedicated mono subwoofer channel) that has a crossover (sometimes these are adjustable or even programmable) this is where you would connect your “LFE” (low frequency energy) input.

The TLDR is that with the stereo L&R connections the sub should handles the crossover. The “LFE” input is expecting your reciever to have handle the crossover.
