They are both fungal infestations and I think the terms are pretty interchangeable. I might be mistaken and will be interested to see what other people have to say.

Biologically, they are different species of fungus, molds are general dark while mildew is light.

In agriculture, the meaning is less precise, mildew can refer to a variety of light-colored fungi that grow on plants, whether or not they are biological molds.

In household situations, mold and mildew are often used interchangeably to refer to fungal growth on a surface. They are rarely biological mildews, as they grow almost exclusively on plants.

They are actually different species of fungi. Mildew Is normally lighter colored, powdery and less harmful. It tends to grow on the surfaces of things and doesn’t mind light.

Mold grows in behind and under things, gets deeper into stuff, and can actually ruin structures and stuff. It tends to be darker and either fuzzy or slimy.

Inhaling mildew will give you a cough and a headache. Inhaling mold is much worse.
